The Secret of the Village Fool
The Secret of the Village Fool
by Rebecca Upjohn
The Secret of the
Village Fool is a story about one family’s struggle to survive during the
Nazi occupation of Zborów, Poland (now Ukraine). This Jewish family lived a
normal life until Germany invaded Poland and the Nazi soldiers began separating
families. Young Munio and Milek were forced to hide in a tunnel that was build
off of the root cellar in their weird neighbour’s yard. Although the boys heard
many strange stories about Anton Suchinski, they soon realized that he was a
good man who risked his life to save them.

Branded by the Pink
Triangle is a gripping story about the struggle of gay men during the Holocaust.
There is a perfect blend of facts, personal stories and photographs. There is
very little information about the plight of homosexuals under the Hitler regime
but this book gives a good overview without being too graphic. The target
audience for the book is young adults so I think that the author took out some
of the horrific details that regularly occurred in the concentration camps.

Every day is Malala Day
Every day is Malala Day
by Malala Yousafzai and Rosemary McCarney
This is a great story of strength and tells the story of how young girls, like Malala, have to fight for access to an education. The photographs are powerful. Every young adult should read this story.
