Breathe
by Sarah Crossan
In a world without air, what would you do to breathe?
In a barren land, a
shimmering glass pod houses the survivors of the Switch, the period when oxygen
levels plunged and the green world withered. A state lottery meant a lucky few
won safety, while the rest suffocated in the thin air. And now Alina, Quinn,
and Bea—an unlikely trio, each with their own agendas, their own longings and
fears—walk straight into the heart of danger. With two days of oxygen in their
tanks, they leave the pod—and everything they know—behind. What will happen on
the third day?
Set in a perilous, devastated world, Breathe is a novel of
adventure, revolution, yearning, and of opening your eyes and rising to your
greatest potential.
The government restricts the amount of air that people are allotted
per year, and everyone must pay a tax. If you use more than your allotment, you
must pay extra. Police watch for people running or walking too quickly because
that also uses extra oxygen. Trees are a premium, most people have never seen
one in person.
The story is not only gripping but it has an excellent
underlying message about protecting the environment and being grateful for what
we take for granted.
This is a great YA Dystopian novel. The characters are
gripping and relatable. It is unpredictable, and the twists are great! I loved
this book and cannot wait to read the next in the series. I could not put it
down. If you like Hunger Games, Divergent, or the Dwellers Saga, you will LOVE
this series!
